Fall Assessment
Not many people can connect with nature just like these characters. Although, many people like nature and treat animals very respectfully, most can’t form an unbreakable bond. The author of this short story used leadership, relationships, and the love of being with nature to create this story.
A big part of this story, Magic and the Night River by Eve Bunting, is leadership. When a person like a coach of a sports team is teaching kids how to become better at a sport, they are leading them to be a better and smarter player. No matter where you go you can find leaders. Though, most people don’t recognize the most important ones. The fishermen are a type of leader when they are directing the birds back and forth from the boat. Another type of leader is a teacher. Most children think that the rules that the teachers have don’t make sense, but once they get older the skills the teachers taught them in school will help them in a difficult situation.
The relationship between Yoshi and his grandfather is very strong. Many people joke about being able to read minds, but if you know someone as well as they know each other, then you almost can read each other’s mind. When Yoshi and his grandfather are together though others may not know what’s happening both can tell what the other is saying with just the nod of the head. You may have heard someone use the expression “are you thinking what I’m thinking?” then you know that those two people aren’t often thinking the same thing, but Yoshi and his grandfather are. Yoshi’s grandfather has a very strong relationship with his birds because he has been working with them for so long. When his birds get lose, because him and his birds are so close they stay and help regardless of them being free.
To create this story the author used the love of being with nature, relationships with people and creatures, and leadership. The story “Magic and the Night River” teaches that if you love something and treat it well that it will repay you in the end.

Not the Truth
“Alright class, take out your homework and I’m going to come around the room to check it,” explained Mrs. Crispen.
“Dang it, I forgot to do the assignment,” Rob said quietly to himself. “Rob where is your paper?” asked Mrs. Crispen.
”Um well last night when I was doing my homework my dad…. Well he fell down the stairs and broke his leg. My mom said we had to drive him to the hospital because we lived to far away from it. While we were at the hospital I was trying to do my homework but people kept on coming in and telling us different things about my dad and I couldn’t do it because there was so much noise,” said Rob.
“O I’m so sorry,” said Mrs. Crispen, “you just turn in the assignment whenever you can.” “Thank you I’ll try to get it done as soon as possible,” said Rob.
Kids all over the world lie to get out of things like doing their homework. Lying is something that lots of people do, but unless it’s to keep someone from being hurt, it is the wrong thing to do.
The short story “The Lie,” by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. is an example of how a lie can be, though in this story it ends better than most do. In this story Eli, the main character, finds a letter that is for his parents and when he reads it he rips it up because he thinks he’ll be in trouble if his parents find out. Lying and not telling someone something that they’re supposed to know is basically the same thing. When someone lies to you it usually makes you wish that they had just told you the truth to start with, but most people when they lie aren’t thinking about what would make the issue better. Most people when they lie are just thinking about how to not get in trouble or delay the problem.
When someone lies they usually feel a guilty feeling and know that if they say one thing wrong they could get caught and will be in trouble. Eli knows that his parents are going to find out some time about the paper so he it makes him act out of the ordinary. If someone is around the person they lied to that person doesn’t always act normal and they don’t think about what they’re doing as well as the would if they didn’t lie. A lot of the time when somebody lies they don’t normally feel comfortable around the person that they are lying to. One thing people do when they lie is they stutter on their words as I trying to think of an excuse.
If someone forgets to do something they may complain that there is too much to remember. One way to not have to remember much is to not lie. When you lie you are just creating more things for you to remember. After you tell a lie you are always thinking about what you said hoping you don’t forget it. Then later you think about an excuse for anything that the person you lied to might ask. Sense you are distracted you aren’t always thinking straight so you may start to forget things you were suppose to know.
Lying is the wrong thing to do unless it is to keep someone from being hurt, though many people do it. If you lie, you’re just making your life harder and making the punishment worse. Not only will you be in trouble for lying but for not telling them to start and making them figure it out themselves.
